Abandon Ship

Sometimes the truths keep coming
Humming
Through loose lips
Sinking ships
Like icebergs
Under my Titanic

I panic

And as the ship takes on water
I try harder
And harder
To be the martyr
And keep the tottering beast
From grip of the magna mater
The water

But I think it’s clear
That this ships going down
And no survivors will be found
Unless you get off now

Get off now!

Abandon ship
And disavow
Your sacred cow
The golden calf
You built on behalf
Of an angry God
In hope’s he’d be awed
In hopes he’d applaud

Your unshod feet

And the way you beat yourself up
Over every defeat
As if the bleating hearts
Of enough slaughtered sheep
Could delete
Your rap sheet

But when the sins of the mothers
Are written on your heart
And the sins of the fathers
Have been there from the start
And when the black arts
Of Sunday school flip charts
Impart
That you’ll always miss the mark

Well then damn the mark

And damn trying so hard
To be anything other
Than what you are
Damn penance and supplication
Damn guilt and frustration
And damn fear of damnation

Let it go

Let the sea claim the ship
Let it silently slip
To its icy grave
As fate may have it

For in the convergence of the twain
It’s loss is your gain
For you were always ordained...
